Wisconsin women’s hockey goes for its fifth national championship on Sunday, facing off with Clarkson in St. Charles, Mo., in a battle of the NCAA Tournament’s top-seeded teams.
These are the two most recent teams not named Minnesota to win a national championship, Clarkson in 2014 and Wisconsin in 2011. The two teams reached the final with a pair of one-goal thrillers, Wisconsin beating Boston College 1-0 and Clarkson prevailing against Minnesota 4-3.

Wisconsin (33-2-4) reached the final thanks to a last-minute goal from defenseman Mellissa Channell to break a scoreless tie in the semifinals against Boston College. The rest of Wisconsin’s season hasn’t been quite as close.
The Badgers are on a 22-game unbeaten streak and boast four players named first- or second-team All-Americans. They are led by first-team goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens, who won the Patty Kazmaier Award for best player in women’s college hockey, a rarity for goaltenders.
Clarkson (31-4-5) is seeking its second national title and is already the only program from outside the WCHA (so, not Wisconsin, Minnesota or Minnesota-Duluth) to win the title. The Golden Knights from Potsdam, N.Y., will be led by the nation’s top goal-scorer in Cayley Mercer, who has 26 goals and 34 assists.
