Someone hacked the University of Wisconsin’s official Twitter account, @UWMadison, on Wednesday morning.
A string of messages — including one that read “lol why go to university when u can just sit at home and fail at life and stuff” — was tweeted from the account. They were sent around 7:30 a.m. ET and stayed on the Twitter page for more than three hours.
There were four tweets sent by the apparent hacker, including one link to a YouTube video. (Warning: Some of the tweets contain explicit language).
Wisconsin issued a statement at 11:15 a.m. saying “a specific cause has not yet been identified, but University Communications will undertake a review of its social media account security in the wake of the disruption.”
“We’re sorry for the disruption, but we appreciate all of the heads-up messages and support from our friends and alums on social media,” Nate Moll, social media coordinator, said in a statement.
