Wisconsin’s most complete performance of the early season has convinced many voters across the country that the Badgers are rounding into form just in time for conference play. And in the Land of 10 Week 3 Power Poll, Wisconsin remains far and away the best of the Big Ten West.
In the latest poll, voted on by 13 Land of 10 writers and released Sunday, Wisconsin held steady at No. 4 behind Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan. The Nittany Lions received all 13 first-place votes. The Badgers placed fourth in the initial poll two weeks ago and have held steady.
I continue to place Wisconsin third in my voting. Penn State remained No. 1 after drubbing Georgia State 56-0. I kept Michigan second after its 29-13 victory against Air Force, although a case certainly could be made for moving Wisconsin ahead of the Wolverines after the Badgers’ 40-6 victory at BYU on Saturday. Ohio State was fourth in my voting, but the Buckeyes jumped two spots in the overall vote from No. 4 to No. 2.
Wisconsin dominated in all phases of the game against the Cougars. Badgers quarterback Alex Hornibrook set Wisconsin single-game record for completion percentage by going 18 of 19 (94.7 percent) for 256 yards with 4 touchdowns. The defense, meanwhile, did not surrender a touchdown.
Few other Big Ten West teams have put together a performance akin to the Badgers’ showing Saturday. Iowa, which is ranked No. 5 in the Power Poll, escaped North Texas 31-14 but trailed the Mean Green 14-10 at halftime. Minnesota easily handled Middle Tennessee 34-3 and is off to a 3-0 start under coach P.J. Fleck. Purdue impressively knocked off Missouri 35-3 and looks like a much-improved team over previous seasons.
Northwestern responded from a loss against Duke with a 49-7 drubbing of Bowling Green. Nebraska, on the other hand, was stunned by Northern Illinois and Illinois lost big to South Florida on Friday.
Wisconsin enters its bye week riding high and has demonstrated the West division may have a difficult time keeping pace.
