Wisconsin-Northwestern series history
Wisconsin and Northwestern have developed a competitive West division rivalry, with the Wildcats beating the Badgers in two of the last three seasons.
In 2014, Northwestern edged Wisconsin 20-14 in Evanston despite the fact that Badgers running back Melvin Gordon tallied 259 rushing yards and 1 touchdown. Wisconsin quarterback Tanner McEvoy was replaced by Joel Stave, who made his first appearance of the season and threw 3 interceptions.
In 2015, Northwestern defeated Wisconsin 13-7 at Camp Randall Stadium in controversial fashion. Stave appeared to throw the game-winning 1-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jazz Peavy. But despite taking a couple steps in the end zone with the ball, officials ruled Peavy did not complete the catch.
Last season, Wisconsin responded with a 21-7 victory against Northwestern in Evanston. Badgers running back Corey Clement rushed for 106 yards with 1 touchdown, and Peavy added a 46-yard rushing score.
The matchup this season will go a long way toward helping Wisconsin (3-0) create some early separation in the Big Ten West division race. The Badgers are the overwhelming favorite in the West and have primarily looked the part during nonconference play.
Northwestern began the season with a 31-20 victory against Nevada before losing 41-17 at Duke. The Wildcats hammered Bowling Green 49-7 to close nonconference play and also have a bye week before opening up the league slate.
Wisconsin leads the all-time series against Northwestern 58-35-5.
