Wisconsin junior kicker Rafael Gaglianone will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery for a back injury on Thursday, the program announced. Gaglianone did not play in the Badgers’ 30-6 victory against Michigan State last weekend due to the injury.
According to the release, Gaglianone’s condition actually seemed to improve Sunday but then worsened as the week went on, ultimately leading to the decision to have surgery.
Gaglianone was 7 for 8 this season on field-goal attempts and made all 10 of his extra-point tries.
“You’re disappointed for Rafael because of all the work he’s put in and how well he was playing,” Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said in the release. “From a football perspective, I’ve appreciated the way the other guys in that unit have responded this week.”
Since Gaglianone appeared in just three games this season, he will be eligible to apply for a medical hardship waiver with the NCAA to seek an additional season of competition, according to the release.
