As No. 8 Wisconsin gears up for a big month on the gridiron, the No. 9 Badgers are readying for the start of the 2016-17 basketball season.
It’s certainly a good time to be a Badgers fan.
Wisconsin is currently the only school in the country to have its football and men’s basketball programs ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press polls. The football team moved up to No. 8 on Sunday, a day after handing then-No. 7 Nebraska its first loss of the season. Meanwhile, the basketball team debuted at No. 9 in the preseason AP poll, which was released Monday.

There are four schools that have football and men’s basketball teams ranked in both polls, but no school has two teams ranked as highly as Wisconsin. Louisville is No. 5 in football and No. 13 in basketball; West Virginia is ranked 14th in football and 20th in basketball; North Carolina is No. 6 in basketball but outside the top 10 at No. 18 in football.
The Badgers won’t drop out of the top 10 in basketball for at least another 13 days, as the season does not start until Nov. 11. Wisconsin should be able to maintain its top-10 spot in football if it can take care of business at Northwestern on Saturday.
In addition to the football and men’s basketball teams doing well in the rankings, the Badgers have the nation’s top-ranked women’s hockey team and the No. 3 women’s volleyball team.
