Wisconsin football will lose grad assistant Al Johnson after the Badgers play Miami in the 2017 Orange Bowl on Dec. 30. After that game Johnson is slated to become the new head coach at East Central University.
“I want to make sure the ECU faculty and staff, alumni, fans and supporters know that I am committed to building ECU into one of the premier NCAA Division II programs in the country,” Johnson said in a release on Tuesday. “My family and I are looking forward to making Ada, Okla., our home and immersing ourselves into the community.”
East Central is a Division II school in Ada, Oklahoma.
Johnson was in his second season at Wisconsin. He came to the Badgers after stints with Division III St. Norbert College, and his role at Wisconsin was focused on the offensive line.
He was a stalwart on Wisconsin’s offensive line during his playing days from 1998 to 2002. He was a finalist twice for the Rimington Trophy, presented to the top center in college football. Johnson spent five seasons in the NFL for the Cowboys, Cardinals and Dolphins after that.
