Wisconsin-Illinois basketball preview
Wisconsin is coming off a 68-63 loss at Maryland on Sunday, which marked the Badgers’ fifth consecutive defeat. Wisconsin tied the score at 60-60 on Aleem Ford’s 3-pointer with 2:39 remaining, but Maryland’s Kevin Huerter buried two jumpers to help give Maryland the lead for good.
Badgers forward Ethan Happ tallied 18 points with 9 rebounds and Nate Reuvers scored a career-high 13 points, while Ford and Brad Davison each scored 12 points. Ford returned to the starting lineup in place of guard Brevin Pritzl, who missed all 11 of his shots a game earlier against Northwestern, including 9 3-pointers.
Wisconsin hasn’t been able to rely on much production from its bench, and that trend continued against Maryland. Pritzl, Aaron Moesch, Charles Thomas, T.J. Schlundt and Alex Illikainen combined to play 38 minutes and didn’t score a point, misfiring on 7 total field-goal attempts.
Without injured guards Kobe King and D’Mitrik Trice, Wisconsin’s backcourt rotation is a mess. Davison has been forced to log heavy minutes at point guard, even though his more natural position is off-guard. However, Wisconsin doesn’t have anybody else it can rely on to serve as a true point guard. When Davison isn’t bringing the ball up the court, it’s usually Khalil Iverson or Happ filling that role. Davison also has been hampered by a left shoulder injury and has been playing most of the season with limited mobility.
Illinois is 12-12 overall and 2-9 in the Big Ten. Both teams are trying to avoid playing on the first day of the Big Ten Tournament on Feb. 28 as one of the four lowest-seeded league teams. Illinois lost 75-67 at Ohio State on Sunday, snapping the Illini’s two-game win streak.
Illinois has two players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Leron Black’s 14.5 points per game. Trent Frazier is averaging 11.7 points, while Michael Finke is at 9.9 points and Kipper Nichols 9.8 points.
Wisconsin defeated Illinois 75-50 at the Kohl Center on Jan. 19. In that game, four Badgers scored in double figures, paced by Davison’s 18 points. Happ recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds, Pritzl scored 16 points and Iverson added 13.
