On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff selection committee will meet and provide the nation with its first rankings of the season.
It’s pretty clear that the four teams in the bracket should the season end Tuesday would be Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Washington, in some order.
But on Monday, Stewart Mandel of Fox Sports picked six teams that could spoil the playoff dreams for those four squads before the season comes to a close. One of them was Wisconsin.
Mandel noted the Badgers (6-2) are still competing for the Big Ten West title. They’ve hung with both Michigan and Ohio State and, should they get a chance to play one of those squads in the Big Ten Championship game, could get some retribution.
To get there, they’ll have to get through challenges with Northwestern and Minnesota, and need Nebraska to lose again. But that’s not a crazy scenario by any stretch. The Badgers will have a tough game against the Wildcats next, before they get Illinois at home, Purdue on the road and end the season at home against the Gophers.
Mandel said the combined record of the teams the Badgers have played is 43-21, which is crazy.
The other teams Mandel has that could make an impact are LSU, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Washington State and Colorado.
