Wisconsin cornerback Nick Nelson announced after the Badgers’ Orange Bowl win that he will declare for the 2018 NFL Draft and skip his senior season. He did so while wearing a makeshift Wisconsin turnover chain.

Nelson had 20 pass breakups and 34 tackles this season. He’ll leave after one season as an active player for the Badgers. Nelson transferred after the 2015 season following two years at Hawaii, and sat out 2016 due to NCAA transfer rules.
The makeshift Wisconsin turnover chain adds another level of significance to his announcement. Wisconsin wasn’t afraid to make fun of Miami’s signature piece of jewelry during its 34-24 Orange Bowl win. First, that meant players bestowing invisible chains on each other before ripping them off. After the game, it appeared on camera that coach Paul Chryst was dissing the chain.
Nelson helped Wisconsin lock down opposing secondaries for most of the season. Now he’ll hope to do the same in the NFL.
