Former Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson moved wedding out of North Carolina due to controversial bathroom bill
Russell Wilson, the Super Bowl winning quarterback who spent his final collegiate season with Wisconsin, had a busy summer off the field.
Wilson married Ciara Harris, an American singer, on July 6 in England. The extravagant ceremony took place at a castle near Liverpool, but it was not the first choice of the celebrity couple.
Wilson and Harris originally planned to get married in North Carolina, but they moved their wedding due to the state’s controversial bathroom law. The Knot, a website that reports on weddings, broke the news in an interview with Wilson and Ciara’s wedding planner, Mindy Weiss.
“They were first getting married in North Carolina, but they called it off due to the transgender bathroom laws,” Weiss said.
Wilson played the first three seasons of his college career in North Carolina at NC State.
He and Ciara are not the first to cancel plans in North Carolina over the bill. The “Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act” better known as HB2 passed earlier and 2016 and restricts transgender residents from choosing what bathroom they would like to use.
