Wisconsin’s on-field performance has made it almost impossible to ignore the Badgers. That includes second-year coach Paul Chryst.
CampusInsiders.com put Chryst second in its coach of the year rankings, trailing only Louisville’s Bobby Petrino. Also, in Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde’s weekly Forde-Yard Dash column, the writer named Chryst his “breakout coach” as one of his September stars.
He won 10 games in his first season at Wisconsin, but nobody was taking the Badgers or Chryst overly seriously coming into this year. Then he beat LSU in Lambeau and Michigan State in East Lansing, and all that has changed. Chryst is more Madison than State Street Brats, a homebody coaching his alma mater in a manner wholly consistent with the Barry Alvarez archetype. And it’s working splendidly.
Before the season started, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh generated the most print. Even though Wisconsin won 10 games in 2015, the Badgers still began the season unranked. Now they’re No. 8 and a chance to move even higher up in the polls when the Badgers visit No. 4 Michigan.
Wither another win, Chryst will earn even more national press.
