Rutgers football 2017 season recap

Rutgers finished the 2017 season, Chris Ash’s second in Piscataway, with a 4-8 record. It was an improvement for a program that went 2-10 in the 2016 season. Rutgers started out the year with back-to-back losses in their nonconference schedule. The team fell to eventual Fiesta Bowl participant Washington in the opener and then lost a home game to Eastern Washington in Week 2 of the season. Rutgers’ only out-of-conference win in the 2017 season came against Morgan State (an FCS team) on Sept. 16.

The Scarlet Knights strung together three Big Ten wins in four games during the middle of the season, beating Illinois, Purdue and Maryland within a month. However, Rutgers’ offense went cold in the team’s final three games of the 2017 campaign. The Scarlet Knights lost their final three games last year, and they were outscored, 116-13, by Penn State, Indiana and Michigan State.
