Rutgers vs. Eastern Michigan preview
Rutgers is 0-1, but the Scarlet Knights played tough against ranked foe Washington, a College Football Playoff participant from a season ago. After losing 48-13 in last year’s game in Seattle, the Scarlet Knights played tough and lost only 30-14. Rutgers trailed only 10-7 at the half and ended up within striking distance of total yards (368 to 309).
Scarlet Knights QB Kyle Bolin passed for 178 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the loss to top-10 Washington. RB Gus Edwards picked up a game-high 79 yards on 24 carries. The close game hinted at drastic improvement for the program, which is led by second-year coach Chris Ash. In 2016, the Scarlet Knights went only 2-10 to miss a bowl game for the second season in a row. Before then, Rutgers played in a bowl four consecutive years.
As for Eastern Michigan, the Eagles won their season-opening game for the fourth time in five years. The 2016 Eagles went 7-6, playing in a bowl game for the first time since the 1987 season. Now Eastern Michigan is looking to go bowling again under the direction of fourth-year coach Chris Creighton. Though the Eagles were a combined 3-29 in road games from 2012-2015, they improved to 4-2 in 2016. The only losses were to Missouri and a Western Michigan team that went undefeated in the regular season and played in the Cotton Bowl.
In the Eagles’ 17-point win against Charlotte, Brogan Roback passed for 267 yards with an interception. On the ground, Shaq Vann ran for 90 yards. It was Eastern Michigan’s second win in as many years against the 49ers. Last season, the Eagles won on the road, 37-19.
But the Eastern Michigan defense led the way in the win. The Eagles had 2 sacks with 7 tackles for loss. Brody Hoying, Justin Moody and Jason Beck all made interceptions. Charlotte also gained only 280 total yards.
In the only prior meeting between Rutgers and Eastern Michigan, the Scarlet Knights won 28-10 in 2013. Rutgers must win to avoid an 0-2 start to a season for the first time since 2008. It opened that season 0-3 — and later 1-5 — before rattling off seven wins in a row to end the season.
The last time Eastern Michigan started 2-0 was in 2011. That year’s group defeated Howard and Alabama State.
