Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs released a statement Tuesday acknowledging that he did, in fact, take a sip of beer at a student tailgate Saturday.
Hobbs was at the tailgate to “calm down what had become a somewhat unruly crowd,” according to the Asbury Park Press. While there, he was offered a beer, and he turned it down. Seconds later, he accepted and said, ““I am of age. If they card me, I’m OK. All right, go RU.”
The video was captured and posted to YouTube by New Brunswick Today:
“My first concern is always the safety and well-being of our students,” Hobbs said in the statement, according to the Asbury Park Press. “Anyone who was at The Alley on Saturday knows that I was acting to ensure that. I regret that any action on my part could be interpreted as promoting the use of alcohol. That was certainly not my intention.”
Since the incident, the school has shut down tailgating at The Alley, which was a popular student destination.
“Regrettably, due to safety concerns, The Alley is no longer available for student tailgating,” the school announced in a statement Tuesday.
