Mitchell was suspended by coach Jim Harbaugh for undisclosed reasons in the summer and then announced he was leaving the program last week. Earlier this week, reports surfaced that he was leaning toward Rutgers.
Mitchell was the No. 5 prospect from New Jersey and No. 167 in the nation in the class of 2016 from Cedar Creek (Egg Harbor, N.J.). Rutgers, located in New Brunswick, N.J., and Egg Harbor are separated by just 80 miles.
Mitchell will have to sit out the 2016 season, but he hasn’t used his redshirt so he will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Mitchell is listed at 6 feet 3, 205 pounds. Here are his high school highlights.
