There’s going to be a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium next year that won’t involve a single inning of baseball.
Instead, Rutgers and Maryland will be holding a football-wrestling doubleheader dubbed the “Big Ten Battle in the Bronx.” It will take place on Nov. 4, 2017.
The football game at Yankee Stadium was previously announced, but Rutgers made the doubleheader with the added wrestling match official Tuesday morning.
“Never before has a doubleheader such as this taken place at a venue so iconic,” Rutgers Athletics Director Patrick Hobbs said in a statement. “We are thrilled to provide our fans this one-of-a-kind experience while enhancing the Big Ten brand in the world’s media capital. This is certain to be a very special day. We are thankful to the New York Yankees, the Big Ten Conference and the University of Maryland for helping to make it possible.”
The full statement, with quotes from both football coach Chris Ash and wrestling coach Scott Goodale, can be found here.
Rutgers is hosting a similar wrestling-football doubleheader of its own this season. The Scarlet Knights wrestling team is set to face Princeton outdoors at High Point Solutions Stadium on Nov. 19 prior to Rutgers hosting Penn State on the gridiron that night.
