Purdue-Rutgers basketball preview
Purdue started its 2017-18 season with a 4-2 record. The Boilermakers had lost one of the top players in college basketball from a year ago in Caleb Swanigan and didn’t necessarily look like the same team.
Fast forward 18 games and the Boilermakers absolutely don’t look like the same team they did a year ago. They look better. Purdue has won each of its last 18 games, including an 11-0 mark in Big Ten play.
The 11-0 record is the best in conference and only Ohio State is one game behind and 10-1. Every other team is at least two games behind in the standings. Purdue is currently ranked as the No. 3 team in the country and its top 5 scorers on this year’s team was on last year’s squad.
The sixth-leading scorer this season is 7-foot-3 freshman Matt Haarms. Haarms may not have the same skill set as teammate Isaac Haas, but together — Haas at 7-foot-2 and Haarms at 7-foot-3 — can be quite the duo to look up to if you’re an opposing team, no matter the level of competition.
Haas averages 14 points and 5 rebounds per game this season in 22 minutes per contest. Haarms is averaging 5 points per game as well, but the Boilermakers as a team spread the ball around, featuring four different athletes who average at least 12 points per contest.
On Jan. 3, when Purdue played Rutgers at Purdue, the Boilermakers won 82-51. This time, the game will be at Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights have gone 2-7 since Jan. 3. The team is 12-12 overall on the season and 2-9 in Big Ten play.
Rutgers is led by Corey Sanders in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Aside from Sanders, Geo Baker averages 11.4 points and Deshawn Freeman averages 11.2 points per contest.
The Scarlet Knights’ best rebounder statistically is Freeman, who averages 7.4 rebounds per game. He is also 6-foot-7.
