In Purdue’s 1-1 start to the season, the Boilermakers are averaging 36 points per game while giving up 28 points per game. Missouri has been in even more high-scoring games, putting up 42.5 points per game and giving up 37 points.
Purdue’s gotten 171 rushing yards from Tario Fuller through two games, but Purdue does most of its offensive damage through the air. QB David Blough is 29-for-39 for 410 yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions so far this season. Three Boilermakers receivers have already reached 100-plus yards on the season: Jackson Anthrop, Cole Herdman and Brycen Hopkins. Herdman leads with 146 yards.
As for the Tigers, RB Damarea Crockett is dealing with a tailbone injury but expects to play. After two games, he has 299 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
QB Dre Lock has been busy for Mizzou, passing for 766 yards while completing 35 of 66 pass attempts. Lock has 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. J’Mon Moore is Lock’s favorite target with 7 receptions for 216 yards and 2 scores.
Purdue and Missouri have met eight times previously with the Boilermakers having a 6-2 series lead all-time. However, it’s the first time the two programs have met since the 1980 season, a 28-25 Purdue win. The Boilermakers have also won the last three meetings (1954, 1956 and 1980).
But the series goes back even further than many might expect. In 1895, Missouri beat Purdue 16-6.
Purdue is led by first-year coach Jeff Brohm. The 46-year-old Brohm was at Western Kentucky for three seasons, going 30-10. He led the Hilltoppers to a No. 24 finish in the AP Poll in 2015. His final two Western Kentucky teams combined to go 22-5 thanks to Brohm’s high-powered offense.
Odom is in his second season as the Tigers coach. Odom, who was the team’s defensive coordinator, is 5-9 as Missouri head coach. He went 4-8 in his first season.
Purdue got to 1-1 with a 35-28 loss to Louisville and defending Heisman winner Lamar Jackson in Indianapolis, Ind., and a 44-21 rout of Ohio last Friday.
Missouri had a wild start to its season, outscoring FCS Missouri State 72-43 in its season-opening game. But the Tigers then lost to South Carolina, 31-13, in an SEC game. This is the third of four consecutive home game for Missouri to start the season.
