Purdue-Michigan preview

The Wolverines have dominated their series against Purdue, going 44-14 all-time against the Boilermakers. In the teams’ most recent meeting, Michigan won at Purdue, 44-13, in 2012. As members of different Big Ten divisions (Michigan in the East, Purdue in the West), the programs haven’t met since. This Saturday’s meeting is the Big Ten opener for both the Boilermakers and the Wolverines.

Michigan has won three in a row against Purdue, spanning 2010 to 2012. The Boilermakers won the previous two meetings in 2008 and 2009. That two-game win streak by Purdue was its first against the Wolverines since the Boilermakers won five in a row from 1962 to 1966.

Michigan is 3-0 and ranked in the top 10 after beating Florida, Cincinnati and Air Force. QB Wilton Speight is 42-for-77 for 571 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. But Michigan has done well on the ground. Ty Isaac, who left Saturday’s game with an injury, has 47 carries for 336 yards to average 7.1 yards per attempt. The Wolverines are also going to be without leading receiver Tarik Black because of a broken foot. Black has 11 receptions for 149 yards and 1 touchdown.

The Wolverines started their season by beating ranked Florida 33-17, in Arlington, Texas. They then won home games against Cincinnati, 36-14, and Air Force, 29-13.

Purdue has shown major improvement at 2-1. First-year coach Jeff Brohm has the Boilermakers averaging 35.7 points and giving up only 19.7 points per game. Last season, Purdue was outscored by an average of 38.3 to 24.6. On offense, David Blough is 51-for-67 for 597 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. A season ago, Blough tossed 21 interceptions.

Though the Boilermakers rushed for less than 100 yards per game in 2016, they’re at 173 yards per game this season. Tario Fuller has picked up 261 yards and 2 touchdowns after only three games.

Purdue has won two in a row after losing to ranked Louisville, 35-28. The Boilermakers then beat Ohio, 44-21, and routed Missouri on the road, 35-3.
