Purdue-Michigan basketball preview
Purdue and Michigan are meeting in the Big Ten Tournament final on March 4 and it will be the third time this season that the two teams will have played. In the first matchup — on Jan. 9 at Michigan — Purdue exited with a 70-69 victory.
In the next matchup — on Jan. 25 at Purdue — the Boilermakers won another close game, 92-88. These two teams that will be competing against each other in the final have shown in the past that they can play an up-tempo game toward the 90s and a slow-it-down type of game near the 60s.
Purdue, who is seen as a bigger team than most — in part due to Isaac Haas being 7-foot-2 and Matt Haarms being 7-foot-3 — lost both matchups on the glass to Michigan despite winning both games. The Boilermakers were led by Carsen Edwards in scoring with his 19 in the first matchup and Vincent Edwards in the second with his 30.
The Boilermakers shot well from behind the arc in both matchups, going 57 percent in the first and 55 percent in the second. Michigan shot 60 percent from the field in the second, more high-scoring matchup and still lost the game.
Purdue is led in scoring this season by Carsen Edwards, who averages 18.4 points per game. In rebounding, Vincent Edwards leads with 7.5 rebounds per contest.
For Michigan, Moritz Wagner leads in points at 14.5 per game and in rebounds at 7.2 per game. Zavier Simpson leads the team in assists and steals per game at 3.6 and 1.2, respectively.
Going into the Big Ten final, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had Purdue as a projected No. 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament and Michigan as a projected No. 5-seed. Depending on the outcome of the game on Sunday, both teams could likely rise or fall in where the NCAA selection committee sees them in terms of what seed they receive.
In neutral site games this season — including the Big Ten Tournament — Purdue is 4-2, while Michigan is 6-1. Purdue had to defeat No. 14-seeded Rutgers in its first game and then No. 7-seeded Penn State in order to make the final.
Michigan had a longer road due to receiving just one bye at the start of the tournament as opposed to the double bye that Purdue was awarded. The Wolverines defeated No. 12-seeded Iowa in overtime, No. 4-seeded Nebraska and No. 1-seeded Michigan State.
