Purdue has won a total of three games against FBS opponents in its three seasons under coach Darrell Hazell.
Given that, and the fact the Boilermakers have finished last in the Big Ten in each of those campaigns, it should be no surprise Hazell is on the hot seat in 2016. According to FOX Sports analyst Bruce Feldman, Hazell is on the hottest seat of them all.
Feldman ranked the top 10 coaches under the most pressure to succeed this season — a list which actually included 11 names — and Hazell was the only Big Ten coach on the list. Here’s the expert’s take on why he is No. 1.
He is 3-29 against FBS teams, 2-22 against the Big Ten and he’s lost all three to arch-rival Indiana. He won 11 games in his final season at Kent State and has barely won half that many in the three years since. The good news: They probably won’t face anything close to a ranked opponent till mid-October.
In case you’re not a Purdue fan or you just haven’t bothered to look at the schedule, here are the first five games Feldman is talking about: Eastern Kentucky, Cincinnati, Nevada, at Maryland and at Illinois. The Boilermakers host Iowa for homecoming on Oct. 15.
Can they win some games over that stretch and at least give Hazell a chance at keeping his job? Feldman doesn’t think so.
