Purdue women’s basketball coach Sharon Versyp is in the earliest stages of breast cancer, the athletic department announced Monday.
Versyp’s specific diagnosis is ductal carcinoma in situ, according to a Purdue press release.
“I feel incredibly blessed to have caught this in its earliest stages and cannot stress enough the importance of regular screenings and mammograms,” Versyp said in a statement. “With an incredible support group around me from my family, my staff and our Purdue community, I know that I’ll beat this and come back stronger.”

Versyp has served as head coach at Purdue, her alma mater, since 2006. Under her leadership, the Boilermakers have won the Big Ten Tournament four times and reached the NCAA Tournament eight times.
This year, Purdue reached the Big Ten Tournament final before losing the championship game to Maryland on Sunday. The Boilermakers are considered to be on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament.
