With all the great running backs in college football primed to make an impact in the NFL, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer considers Penn State’s Saquon Barkley one of the best.
Meyer said Monday at his weekly press conference that Barkley, a true sophomore, is a future “first-rounder at tailback.”
Indeed, in Walter Football’s 2018 mock draft, Barkley goes No. 13 to the Dolphins. That’s rare, too — just three running backs have been selected in the first round in the last four drafts.

Barkley rushed for 194 yards on 26 carries in a 38-10 Ohio State win last year. He ran for 1,076 yards at 5.9 per carry as a freshman in 2015.
This year, Barkley has rushed for 582 yards at 5.0 ypc. He ran all over Maryland for 202 yards on 31 carries on Oct. 8 — his first career 200-yard game his second 100-yard game of the season.
Ohio State LB Chris Worley also had high praise for Barkley on Monday, calling him the “total package.” DE Sam Hubbard said Barkley kind of sneaked up on the Buckeyes last year, but he won’t on Saturday.
Ohio State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) plays at Penn State (4-2, 2-1) at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Buckeyes are a three-touchdown favorite at Beaver Stadium.
