2017 is shaping up to be a big year for the Mascot Hall of Fame (yeah, that’s a real thing). And we’re not talking about the doors officially opening on the Hall (yeah, that’s really happening — in Whiting, Ind.).
No, the really big news came on Friday, when the Hall announced its nominees for the Class of 2017 on the same day as the Hall’s groundbreaking ceremony in Whiting.
And among the six on that list is none other than the Penn State Nittany Lion.
Established online in 2005, the Hall of Fame currently sits at 18 members, from the Phillie Phanatic to the Phoenix Suns Gorilla.
There are currently seven college mascots in the hall of fame, and the Big Ten has three of them — Brutus the Buckeye (Ohio State), Bucky the Badger (Wisconsin) and Lil’ Red (Nebraska).
The Nittany Lion is famous for crowd surfing and wearing that blue and white striped scarf. Up for nomination with the Lion is Tommy Hawk (Chicago Blackhawks), Benny the Bull (Chicago Bulls), Sluggerr (Kansas City Royals), Stuff (Orlando Magic) and Hairy Dawg (University of Georgia).
If the Lion does make it, it will be the same year as the Hall opens its 25,000-square-foot facility on the shore of Lake Michigan.
You can cast your vote for the Nittany Lion here. Enshrinement will be based on the vote of a committee as well as fan voting. The Lion is counting on you.
