It was a night Penn State players, students and fans won’t forget. As a national audience watched, the Nittany Lions upset No. 2 Ohio State 24-21 in coach James Franklin’s signature win with the Nittany Lions.
The win moved Penn State to 5-2. It also marked a major poll jump.
Previous rankings (Coaches/AP): NR/NR
New rankings (Coaches/AP): NR (up to 27th)/No. 24
Last result: Won 24-21 vs. No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday
What it means: Welcome back to the Top 25, Penn State. The Nittany Lions are ranked for the first time since 2011, so Sunday marked a long-awaited return to the national spotlight.
Plus, with Purdue up next, Penn State is in great position to get to 6-2. The Nittany Lions are suddenly in the Big Ten East race, so now the pressure really intensifies. Penn State will likely be favored to win in every game the rest of the regular season, so the Nittany Lions can’t really play the underdog card anymore.
That’ll be a new situation for Franklin’s tenure.
