As five top-10 teams in the College Football Playoff rankings fell, Penn State surged late to win at Indiana. That was the Nittany Lions’ sixth win in a row — and third game in a row scoring at least 41 points.
But what did the win do for Penn State? The Nittany Lions were outside the Top 10 in the AP and Coaches polls, so Saturday’s wild results meant Penn State would get a boost.
Previous rankings (Coaches/AP): No. 14/No. 12
New rankings (Coaches/AP): No. 10/No. 9
Last result: Beat Indiana 45-31
What it means: Penn State is in a great position to win the Big Ten East title. If the Nittany Lions defeat Rutgers and Michigan State, and if Ohio State wins at home against Michigan on Nov. 26, Penn State wins the division title. If that happens, the Nittany Lions would be in consideration for a College Football Playoff spot, especially if there’s more chaos like on Saturday.
These rankings are a sign Penn State is continuing to gain national respect. But the real story will be where the committee ranks Penn State in Tuesday’s new playoff rankings.
Not bad for a team that has battled injuries and wasn’t even ranked earlier this season.
