Penn State and Pitt hadn’t played each other since 2000. The rivalry stretched back into football history, with bragging rights up for grabs for both the state and the eastern region.
No matter how the players tried to talk about how it was only just another game, it’s clear that wasn’t the case.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi, while speaking to his team before the game, made it clear what he believed the Nittany Lions thought about the Panthers.
“They don’t respect you! This ain’t 1976! It ain’t 1968! It’s 2016! They don’t respect! They’re going to find out!”
You can hear a fired up Narduzzi starting at 1:32.
Did the passionate speech help the Panthers? Well, the end result certainly went against Penn State as Pitt won 42-39.
