Tony Carr’s ridiculous game-winning 3 caps Penn State’s upset over Ohio State
Sophomore guard Tony Carr has been the man for Penn State basketball all season and on Thursday night, he proved why.
After No. 13 Ohio State’s Keita Bates-Diop drilled a deep 3-pointer to tie the game with five seconds to go, Carr banked a 3-ball at the buzzer for the Nittany Lions in a 82-79 upset victory in Columbus.
The Lions improve to 14-8, while the Buckeyes drop to 18-5. Here’s the full box score.
Here’s the sequence of play:
Carr finished with a game-high 28 points for the Lions, who saw junior guard Josh Reaves return with 10 points off the bench and a spark of energy. Lamar Stevens had 15 points and Shep Garner had 14 including four 3’s in the effort.
Bates-Diop had 25 for the Buckeyes and Jae’Sean Tate had 17.
It was a back-and forth game with the Lions in the lead for the most part, building an 11-point lead at one time before the Buckeyes made their move, going on a 16-5 run to tie the game at 30-30 with five to go in the first half.
But the Lions buckled down and re-took the lead thanks to free throws from Reaves as the team went into the half up 38-37.
After the break, the Buckeyes took a quick lead on a Tate layup then built on it, but the Lions stayed close and grabbed a 44-43 lead two minutes later.
For the next 10 or so minutes, the Lions built on the lead, taking their largest of the night up 67-54 on a 3-ball by Garner with just under eight to go but the pesky Buckeyes didn’t fade chipping away at the lead and tying it on Bates’ shot until Carr got them at the end.
