The Nittany Lions reached the Legends Classic title game by routing rival Pitt, 85-54. With the win, the Nittany Lions improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Penn State shot 57.6 percent from the field in the win against the Panthers. All five starters reached double figures, with Tony Carr leading with his 16 points. Carr made 6 of his 9 attempts while also posting 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Mike Watkins added 13 points while making all 6 shots from the field. Watkins also had 5 boards and 3 blocks.
Penn State led 47-21 at the half. The blowout almost matched the program’s biggest win against Pitt. The Nittany Lions beat the Panthers 84-44 on Jan. 14, 1967. With the win on Monday, Penn State is now 76-72 all-time against the Panthers, though the win snapped a losing skid of seven games.
Nittany Lions coach Pat Chambers is in his seventh season with the program. Last year, Penn State went 15-18 overall and 6-12 in the Big Ten. But Chambers and the Nittany Lions returned most of its players from a season ago.
The Nittany Lions reached 5-0 by beating Campbell (86-75), Fairleigh Dickinson (81-57), Montana (70-57), Columbia (79-65) and then Pitt.
Texas A&M is 3-0 this season and is ranked No. 16. The Aggies beat Oklahoma State, 72-55, to move on to Tuesday’s Legends Classic final. DJ Hogg led Texas A&M with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Aggies had a 39-22 halftime lead against Oklahoma State. Robert Williams dominated in his 24 minutes, posting 11 points with 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks.
Texas A&M is coached by Billy Kennedy, who’s in his seventh season with the program. Last season, the Aggies went 16-15 overall and 8-10 in the SEC. In the previous season, Texas A&M reached the Sweet 16 and finished 28-9.
