There’s no doubt former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley is incredibly humble.
But on ESPN’s show Hey Rookie, Welcome to the NFL, Barkley on Tuesday showed a little bit of confidence in himself, as well.
When asked about his draft status, he said:
“I don’t think it’s fair because of my position that I shouldn’t go No. 1. If you think I’m the best player in the draft, take me.”
Then he added:
“Don’t look if, ‘Oh a running back’s only going to give you seven to 10 years, but a quarterback’s going to give you 15 years.’ That’s not necessarily true. The only thing we know right now is what we can go off is film and I don’t think anybody’s film, doesn’t compare to mine to be completely honest. The fact that I’m a running back and I can’t go No. 1, doesn’t make sense. This is no disrespect to any Heisman Trophy winner or any guys who won awards over me, but I just don’t think that they are on the same level as me.”

The show, which will play weekly on the ESPN family of networks, also featured Barkley working out with teammate Marcus Allen, meeting Robert Griffin III, petting alligators with Allen and picking out his NFL draft suit. At one point, the guide joked that Barkley may have to buy new shorts in the gift shop because he was so scared of the gators.
Barkley did feed some gators, yelling, “I’m Oprah Winfrey right now. ‘You get a piece! You get a piece!'”
