The 2018 NFL Draft is still 11 months away, but it seems like Penn State’s Saquon Barkley has the No. 1 running back spot just about locked up.
When asking NFL scouts and general managers for an early look at next year’s class, one high-level executive summed up what many are feeling about Penn State’s Saquon Barkley: He has the potential to be the best running back of the last decade. Even better than Leonard Fournette or Ezekiel Elliott.
Barkley has been getting rave reviews and high projections ever since the season ended, but this evaluation is as good as it gets. He’s coming off a season during which he averaged 5.5 yards per carry and scored 18 touchdowns, and is a Heisman Trophy favorite headed into his junior season.
Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman reported at the NFL draft combine back in March that several sources expect Barkley to be a top-five pick. WalterFootball’s mock draft has him going to the San Fransisco 49ers with the No. 3 overall pick. Exact teams and fits are tough to project so far in advance, but talent like Barkley’s isn’t.
