It’s highly unlikely Penn State offensive lineman Derek Dowrey will win the Rose Bowl MVP award, but he’s not leaving southern California without a distinguished honor.
Dowrey traded in his helmet for a chef’s hat and made the ceremonial first cut at the 61st annual Lawry’s Beef Bowl in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night.

The Beef Bowl is a Rose Bowl tradition. In the days leading up to the Granddaddy of Them All, the teams meet for meat at Lawry’s Beverly Hills (Penn State on Wednesday, USC on Thursday this year) and eat a lot of prime rib.
“The meal is a large part of the celebration because these are young men with enormous appetites, but it’s more about celebrating together away from the practice field in a legendary setting,” Lawry’s Restaurants CEO Richard N. Frank told NBC4.
