Penn State vs. Pittsburgh preview
The rivals meet again.
After not playing since the 2000 season, Penn State and Pitt play for the second season in a row. Last year, the Panthers beat the Lions in a thriller, 42-39. Penn State later regrouped from the tough loss to finish 11-3, winning the Big Ten and playing in the Rose Bowl.
Last week, the Nittany Lions rolled Akron, 52-0. Heisman hopeful Saquon Barkley had a huge game, rushing for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 14 carries. He also had 54 receiving yards on only 3 catches. QB Trace McSorley finished with 280 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception and 48 rushing yards with a score.
Pitt, which also beat eventual national champion Clemson in 2016, struggled against FCS foe Youngstown State. The Panthers beat the FCS playoffs finalist, 28-21, in overtime. Pitt did most of its damage on the ground, as Qadree Ollison rushed for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the team’s 208-yard day on the ground.
The Nittany Lions lead the series 50-43-4 all-time. However, Pittsburgh has won the last two meetings. Along with the 3-point win from a year ago, the Panthers won 12-0 in 2000. Pittsburgh’s two-game winning streak followed Penn State’s run of seven in a row.
While last year’s game was in Pittsburgh, this season’s meeting is at Penn State. The Lions will have a student section White Out for the game.
Nittany Lions coach James Franklin said while he understands the significance of the rivalry game, what makes the game important to him is that it’s this week’s game.
“This is the Super Bowl for us because it’s the game we play Saturday,” Franklin said Tuesday. “Last week, our Super Bowl was Akron. I think when I say these things, people act like I’m trying to say the Pitt game is not a big game. It’s a huge game. It’s the most important game we have on our schedule. Last week, [Akron] was the most important game that we had on our schedule. That’s just how we’re going to approach it.”
