It’s looking like Penn State and Pitt will play a night game at Heinz Field in 2018. The in-state rivals have not yet officially announced a time for their Sept. 8 meeting, but the Pittsburgh Pirates broke the scheduling news Friday afternoon.
The Pirates announced their Sept. 8 meeting with the Miami Marlins was moved from 7:05 p.m. ET to 1:05 p.m., “to allow the University of Pittsburgh to schedule its gridiron clash with Penn State University at night.”
Here’s the full release from the Pirates:
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today a game time change for its game on Saturday, September 8 vs. the Miami Marlins at PNC Park. First pitch has been moved from the originally scheduled 7:05 p.m. EST to 1:05 p.m. EST to allow the University of Pittsburgh to schedule its gridiron clash with Penn State University at night.
The Pirates’ move to 1:05 p.m. will alleviate potential congestion on the North Shore, while also allowing fans the unique opportunity to enjoy a “day/night doubleheader” of baseball and football on the North Shore.
The 2018 meeting will be Penn State’s third meeting with Pitt in three seasons, but both of the last two contests have been afternoon kickoffs. Pitt was a 42-39 winner at Heinz Field in 2016 and Penn State beat the Panthers 33-14 at Beaver Stadium in 2017.
