Sorrell had initially committed to Vanderbilt out of Middletown (Ohio), but he followed James Franklin to Penn State, according to 247Sports.
Below is his full statement posted to Twitter.
First of all, I would like to start off by thanking Coach Franklin and the rest of the coaching staff for giving me an opportunity to play football at Penn State University and continue my education here. I also want to thank the athletic training staff for helping me come back from multiple injuries [that] have occurred since I stepped on campus. I would also like to thank the academic support staff for their continued help in my academic career. Also, I want to thank my parents, teammates, friends, girlfriend and family for all the support that they have given me throughout my entire life and the support they will continue to give me throughout the process.
Having said this, I am announcing that I will no longer be playing football here at Penn State due to many injuries throughout my college career and with this final repeating knee injury that I am currently and have been fighting for the past year.
This decision, which is heavy on my heart, has been discussed, reviewed and agreed upon by the Team Doctors, Training Staff, Coach Franklin and my parents. While I will never again wea the basic blues and black shoes, I will still remain part of the team as Coach Franklin is allowing me to join the strength staff as an intern for the remainder of my college career.
Finally, I want to thank the fans for supporting our team and myself these last few years and for all they have given us. I wouldn’t trade my experience here at Penn State for anything in the worl! I love it here and it will always ben a huge part of my life. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of this awesome team, University, and the Penn State culture. I am taking the next step in my life and as one door closes another one opens. I am looking forward to my future and am thankful for the blessings I’ve been given from God. We Are and will always be… Penn State!
Thank you everyone,
