Penn State-Maryland series history
Penn State has long controlled the all-time series against Maryland. In 40 meetings, the Nittany Lions are 37-2-1. But one of those Terrapins wins was recent. After beating Penn State in 1961, Maryland then won its second game against the Nittany Lions in 2014, 20-19.
Since Maryland beat Penn State on the road in 2014, Penn State has won the past two meetings. In 2015, the Nittany Lions this time picked up the 1-point win, beating the Terrapins 31-30. Last season, Penn State routed a Maryland team that was 4-0 by a 38-14 score. The Nittany Lions outgained the Terrapins 524 to 270.
Penn State is 9-2 this season and 6-2 in the Big Ten. In Week 12, the Nittany Lions beat Nebraska, 56-44. Maryland played tough at Top 25 Michigan State, but the Terrapins lost, 17-7. Maryland is 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the Big Ten.
If Penn State beats Maryland, the Nittany Lions will post consecutive double-digit win seasons. They haven’t done that since going 11-2 in 2008 and 2009.
Penn State is averaging 39.4 points per game while giving up 16.6 points per game. Saquon Barkley, once the Heisman favorite, has 1,057 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns. He also has 590 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns, two kick return touchdowns and a passing touchdown.
Barkley might have played his last home game in Penn State’s 56-44 win against Nebraska.
“Everybody talks about the yards and the touchdowns and the hurdles and all those types of things,” Nittany Lions coach James Franklin said after beating Nebraska. “But for the people that have been able to get to know Saquon Barkley, he’s a better person. He’s got a smile on his face every single day. He’s a tremendous teammate. He’s happier when other guys score than he is for himself. He’s been a model citizen off the field. He’s killed it in the classroom. He’s just been awesome.”
QB Trace McSorley is also putting up impressive numbers. McSorley is 230-for-353 passing for 2,991 yards, 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He also has 395 rushing yards with 10 scores.
