Penn State LB Manny Bowen will miss his third straight game, head coach James Franklin confirmed to reporters on Tuesday. Bowen did not play against Rutgers after what Franklin said was a “violation of team rules.” He also missed last week’s game against Nebraska, and now he won’t play in Penn State’s regular-season finale against Maryland.
Bowen, a junior, has been a standout defender for Penn State this season, his second as a starter. Brandon Smith has filled in for him, registering 23 tackles in two games. Penn State allowed 44 points in its win over Nebraska, though 34 of those came in the second half.
Maryland’s rushing attack is its biggest strength, but Bowen’s absence shouldn’t be crippling for the Nittany Lions. The Terps have gained at least 160 yards on the ground in each of their last three games, but have not been as effective as they were in the beginning of the season when they averaged over 5 yards per carry in three of their first four games.
Penn State vs. Maryland kicks off at 3:30 p.m. in College Park. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
