Joe Kovacs came up just short of a gold medal Thursday, and it only took an Olympic record to beat him.
The Penn State graduate’s throw of 21.78 meters in the shot put was good for a silver medal, though, as he finished behind fellow American Ryan Crouser’s throw of 22.52 meters.
Kovacs joins Miles Chamley-Watson and Monica Aksamic, both fencers, as Penn State grads who have medaled in Rio.

The defending world champion, Kovacs, 27, entered the games as the top-ranked shot-putter in the world.
Kovacs competed at Penn State from 2008-11.
