Penn State (2-0) is No. 5 in the nation after beating Akron 52-0 and Pitt 33-14. James Franklin had interesting words about the win, saying when Pitt beat the Nittany Lions last year, it was like the Super Bowl for them. Franklin said beating Pitt was the same as beating Akron — that no win is more significant. Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi fired back, saying that “They went low, we went high.”
Don’t expect that much drama for Saturday’s Penn State-Georgia State game.
After two games, Heisman hopeful Saquon Barkley has 260 rushing yards with 3 touchdowns and 99 receiving yards with a score. Fellow Heisman candidate QB Trace McSorley has also had a strong start. He’s 33-for-53 passing for 444 yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. McSorley has 113 rushing yards with one score.
Georgia State is 0-1, losing to Tennessee State 17-10 in Week 1. The Panthers struggled on the ground in the loss, picking up only 49 yards as a team. QB Connor Manning was 14-for-17 with 159 passing yards. Aaron Winchester was 4-for-6 for 65 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Panthers, who play in the Sun Belt Conference, haven’t played since that Aug. 31 season opener.
The Nittany Lions and Panthers haven’t played each other before. Penn State hasn’t lost a nonconference home game since the 34-31 loss to UCF in 2014. Don’t expect the Nittany Lions to have much trouble against the Panthers.
Georgia State played a Big Ten program just last season, going to top-10 Wisconsin. The Panthers battled all game against the eventual Cotton Bowl champions before losing 23-17. Georgia State even led 17-13 in the fourth quarter before Wisconsin did just enough to get the win.
If Penn State wins, it would be its 12 win in its past 13 games. Since a 2-2 start to the 2016 season, the Lions are 12-1 with a Big Ten title win and an appearance in the Rose Bowl.
The game is Penn State’s last before starting Big Ten play. After the Georgia State game, the Nittany Lions play at Iowa. The Big Ten announced earlier this week the Penn State-Iowa game will be at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 23 on ABC.
