Latest Penn State football news

Scout-team heroes

Andrew Callahan of Lions247 takes an in-depth look at the lot of Penn State scout teamers like offensive lineman Charlie Shuman and defensive tackle Ryan Monk, and their behind-the-scenes impact on the Nittany Lions’ success last season.

“They should be just as proud of what we’ve accomplished as Saquon Barkley,” coach James Franklin told Callahan, adding that the scout teamers were “critical” to PSU’s 11-3 finish in 2016.

Shuman and Monk were among the players who mimicked each week’s opponent in practice for the Lions’ starters. The two of them also proved to be observant during games and were able to pass on tips to the regulars.

On the attack

Mike Poorman of writes about the PSU offense, which he believes could challenge the numbers put up by the great 1994 unit. As tight end Mike Gesicki told Poorman, “That’s not what we’re reaching for. But we do know it’s up there and something we’d like to achieve, as well.” One area where the Lions could improve is pass efficiency. While quarterback Trace McSorley had a great year in 2016, his completion percentage was 57.8. In the four years offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead spent as head coach at Fordham, his QBs never completed fewer than 64.8 percent.

(Blair) Thomas’ promises

Blair Thomas, once a star running back at Penn State, told Aaron Carr of PennLive.comthat Barkley is “probably the best running back to come through that program” and believes the Lions can replicate last season.

Commit corner

On Saturday, Harrisburg (Pa.) High School, featuring one PSU commit, Shaquon Anderson-Butts, beat Philadelphia’s Imhotep Charter High School, featuring another, Isheem Young. Defensive end Micah Parsons, a once and (perhaps) future Lions commit, also stars for Harrisburg. PennLive examines the performances of all three players.

Ain’t that a kick

John McGonigal of the Centre Daily Times interviewed another 2018 commit, kicker Jake Pinegar, and the Iowa native told him he has nailed field goals in practice from “65 or 70 yards.”

Zain Retherford goes 1-1 at Worlds

Lions wrestler Zain Retherford went 1-1 at the Senior World Championships in Paris, and told it was “definitely a good wakeup call.” Retherford is a two-time NCAA champion at 149 pounds.
