Most people know that Penn State football upset then-No. 2 Ohio State 24-21 on Saturday night.
What some may not know is what happened a few hours before that.
The Nittany Lion hockey team, on the road at then-No. 3 Notre Dame, upset the Irish in overtime.
Rewind to a few hours before both games started and you get this interaction between football kicker Tyler Davis and hockey captain/forward David Goodwin.
— David Goodwin (@psu_9) October 25, 2016
That’s Goodwin texting Davis good luck before the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes kicked and Davis returning the wishes before the Lions and Irish, while telling Goodwin to keep his players out of the penalty box.
In the football game, despite having a kick blocked, Davis connected with a 34-yard field goal to narrow the score to 21-17 late in the game. The block was the first missed field goal in Davis’ career as the junior is 19-for-20 with a long of 42 yards.
Goodwin didn’t have as big of an impact in the game against the Irish, but he does have three assists on the season. Last year, he led the Lions in points with 38, netting 11 goals and dishing 27 assists.
Regardless, perhaps the caption in Goodwin’s tweet is correct and hopefully for the Lions, the pair will continue to text before big games.
