Penn State is in the top 20 for the first time in five years. The Nittany Lions could be heading to a New Year’s bowl game. And they still have an outside shot at winning the Big Ten East.
But first things first for coach James Franklin.
Penn State (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten) has hosts Iowa (5-3, 3-2) in a big night game at 7:30 p.m. ET this weekend. And it’s that game which tops Franklin’s list of things to focus on this week. That list is seven items long, but there’s a common theme.

Saturday’s contest will mark the first time the Hawkeyes have met the Nittany Lions since 2012, when Penn State went in to Kinnick Stadium and delivered the home team a 38-14 drubbing. 20th-ranked Penn State is on a two-game winning streak in the series, but Iowa won the previous three meetings before that. In that streak are two memorable wins for the Hawkeyes in 2008 and 2009, when Iowa knocked off an unbeaten and top-5 Penn State squad both seasons.
