Penn State was not completely healthy on defense even before Saturday.
Cornerback Grant Haley had missed last week’s game against Pitt and linebacker Jason Cabinda had to leave that game with a hand issue. Then, Saturday morning, Brandon Bell — a fellow outside linebacker — entered Beaver Stadium on crutches. And before kickoff, it was disclosed defensive end Evan Schwan would not be available for the Nittany Lions against Temple.
In the first quarter against the Owls, safeties Malik Golden and Marcus Allen both had to go to the locker room for separate injury issues.
In total, Penn State was missing six defensive starters in the first quarter. Golden and Allen could return, but the Lions are being stretched thin defensively.
Penn State was winning 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. But on offense, star running back Saquon Barkley was also facing his own ankle issue.
