A Penn State de-commit says he didn’t have a relationship with Nittany Lions coach James Franklin — and that the situation was a reason why he flipped to Virginia Tech.
Rivers said although Franklin “was good,” he didn’t interact with him as much as Fuente.
“I didn’t have a relationship with Coach Franklin,” Rivers said of the Penn State head coach. “We never talked or anything like that and Coach Fuente was hitting my phone up left and right, calling me. Just simple things like, ‘send me a picture of you on a snowboard, snowboarding on the mountain’ and stuff. Just things like that, trying to build not just a football relationship but a friendship. That stood out to me. I’m a family man so, you know, stuff like that just stood out to me a little bit more. Coach Franklin, he was good but he just didn’t interact with me as well as Coach Fuente did.”
But one Penn State commit isn’t buying it.
Four-star DL Fred Hansard came to Franklin’s defense.
“Put some respect on my Coach name!!!” Hansard tweeted.

Current Penn State DL Antonio Shelton also had a strong response. He said the commitment change was a little more, um, personal.
“Bro out here lying on my coach,” Shelton wrote on Twitter. “You switched because your girl go there. We’ll just sit back and count rings tho. No worries on this side.”
