It’s inevitable for the top players in college to draw comparisons. And while many experts think Saquon Barkley is the best running back since Ezekiel Elliott or Adrian Peterson or Reggie Bush, Kirk Herbstreit thinks Barkley is too unique to be compared.
Herbstreit, an ESPN analyst, was asked about Barkley comparisons Friday when he met with reporters the day before College GameDay airs in State College. While Herbstreit thinks Barkley can show flashes of Reggie Bush in the open field, the Penn State star is so multi-faceted and used differently that Herbstreit tries to avoid comparing him to other running backs.
“I think in the open field, he reminds me of Reggie Bush because of how he makes people miss. I think he’s his own guy,” Herbstreit said. “…Saquon is used in a very different way in this offense, where it’s more about getting him in space, and that’s why he reminds me of a guy like Reggie Bush.
“I think he’s in his own category with his skill set and what he does. How refreshing is it to see him carry himself the way he does. In this offense, they don’t try to feature him. They take what the defense gives them.”
