Can Christian Hackenberg become an NFL starter in 2017? A Jets legend is rooting for the former Penn State signal caller.
Joe Namath recently told the New York Daily News that he would like to see Hackenberg win the Jets quarterback job in the upcoming season.
“I’d like to see Hackenberg get a shot, and I’d like to see him win the job if possible,” Namath said. “That would give us, ‘Maybe we don’t do it this year, but boy we’ll get ready next year.’ I’m not wishing Josh (McCown) any bad luck. But I certainly would like to see Hackenberg blossom.”
Hackenberg, who started at Penn State from 2013-15, was picked in the second round by the Jets in the 2016 NFL Draft. He did not play in a regular-season game last year, and the Jets finished 5-11.
The team parted ways with Ryan Fitzpatrick after the 2016 season and signed Josh McCown in March. McCown, Hackenberg and Bryce Petty will battle for the starting job in training camp.
Broadway Joe, and a lot of Penn State fans, are hoping Hackenberg gets a shot.
