James Franklin will be making his first trip to Iowa as Penn State’s head coach on Saturday night (7:30 ET, ABC). He and his team will be met by Kinnick Stadium’s infamous pink visitors locker room.
The locker rooms — the idea of legendary Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry to have a calming effect on opponents — are seen as “awesome” to Franklin. The fourth-year Penn State coach joked Tuesday that he thought it was a great gesture of Iowa to honor Penn State’s original school colors, pink and black.
“Obviously one of the kind of cooler, historical things in college football from a tradition standpoint is their pink locker room,” Franklin told reporters at his weekly press conference. “I think it’s awesome. I’m not going to make a big deal out of it with our guys.
“I’m actually going to talk to our guys about it being a really, really nice gesture by the University of Iowa to welcome Penn State, since our original school colors are pink and black, and how wonderful it is and what a wonderful gesture it is that they painted their locker room pink for us.”
The No. 4 Nittany Lions are hoping for their fourth straight win over Iowa and second consecutive win in Kinnick Stadium.
