James Franklin has come a long way in just more than two months.
At 2-2, Franklin’s Nittany Lions looked destined for another season around .500 and part of the Penn State fan base was growing tired of the third-year coach. But Franklin got a public vote of confidence from his Athletic Director, Sandy Barbour and his team has rattled off eight consecutive wins on its way to Indianapolis and the Big Ten title game.
Franklin was voted the Big Ten Coach of the Year by the media and Penn State fans are seeing their team at on-field heights that were unimaginable four-and-a-half years ago.
College GameDay aired a segment featuring an interview with Franklin on Saturday morning, showing the coach’s journey from his first game at Penn State in 2014 to his first Big Ten Championship Game. It featured a lot of doubt, right up until the current winning streak.
“You heard that right from the beginning, our first 2.5 years, there were a lot of those statements,” Franklin said about people claiming he was wrong for the job. “I never felt that internally.”
