Former Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti named a Saints team captain
Michael Mauti was one of the most vocal leaders who helped lead Penn State through a troubling transition in 2012.
He’s showing a similar kind of leadership in the NFL.
The Saints announced Thursday that Mauti will be their special teams captain this season. He joins Drew Brees (Purdue), Max Unger, James Laurinaitis (Ohio State) and Cameron Jordan as New Orleans’ 2016 captains.

Mauti’s father, Rich, also played for the Saints, and Michael Mauti grew up in New Orleans.
Mauti tore his ACL toward the end of his senior season at Penn State and fell to the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft, going to Minnesota. He was signed by the Saints prior to last season and made an impact on special teams.
Most notably, Mauti blocked a punt last season and returned it for a touchdown.
